Linden,
located on the Demerara River about 107 km from Georgetown,
was created a town only in 1970 and incorporates the mining
town of Mackenzie, and two former village districts, Wismar
and Christianburg. The area of the town is approximately
142 km² with an estimated population of 29,000.
Linden
is the second-largest city in Guyana, and capital of the
Upper Demerara-Berbice region. It was declared a town in
1970, and includes the communities of MacKenzie and Wismar.
It lies on the Demerara River and has a population of roughly
60,000. It is primarily a bauxite mining town, containing
a mine 60-90 metres deep, with many other pits now in disuse.
Linden
is the largest urbanity without a university within the
country, if one considers the University in Turkeyen in
Greater Georgetown as outside Georgetown.
The mining company
runs a colonial-era guest house, with other hotels including
the Summit Hotel and Hotel Star.
