Linden, second largest city in Guyana

Towns of GuyanaLinden, located on the Demerara River about 107 km from Georgetown, was created a town only in 1970 and incorporates the mining town of Mackenzie, and two former village districts, Wismar and Christianburg. The area of the town is approximately 142 km² with an estimated population of 29,000.

Linden is the second-largest city in Guyana, and capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region. It was declared a town in 1970, and includes the communities of MacKenzie and Wismar. It lies on the Demerara River and has a population of roughly 60,000. It is primarily a bauxite mining town, containing a mine 60-90 metres deep, with many other pits now in disuse.

Linden is the largest urbanity without a university within the country, if one considers the University in Turkeyen in Greater Georgetown as outside Georgetown.

The mining company runs a colonial-era guest house, with other hotels including the Summit Hotel and Hotel Star.

Schools in Linden include Mackenzie High School, established in 1946
